Handwashing, respiratory hygiene, careful surface disinfection, and avoiding shared towels or utensils reduce spread. A vaccine against types 4 and 7 is used by the United States military but is not routinely available to the public.
Most infections resolve with rest, fluids, and symptom relief. There is no routinely approved adenovirus-specific treatment for the general population; severe infections require medical care and may need specialist-directed antiviral therapy.
